E-commerce mobile applications have become increasingly common, and growth has accelerated during 2020’s stay-at-home orders. Whether consumers use retail apps for delivery or pickup curbside or in-store, mobile commerce (a.k.a. m-commerce) is booming.
But, the vast majority of retail mobile apps are not sufficiently secured. As a result, they are at risk for security breaches and financial losses.
A recent study found that:
- 70% of popular Android retail apps leak sensitive personal data
- 82% of brick and mortar stores’ retail apps actively leak sensitive data
- 92% of online retailers’ apps actively leak sensitive data
iOS apps are not immune, either, as evidenced by high-profile breaches and the rise of fake and malicious apps in the Apple App Store.
With tens of millions of dollars on the line, retailers cannot afford to ignore e-commerce application security.
